Chapter Thirteen

Two days of hard riding later, we arrived at Dover, seeking the first available ship that had room for all of us, minus the horses, which we placed in a stable to await our return.

I’d been to Dover before, but it was with my parents, to take the ferry to France. I was so chuffed to be riding on a ferry, until we were greeted by the English channel’s typical choppy waves and high winds. Soon I was lying below decks on a round settee, which, I later found out, is the exact opposite of what you should do. One should not be below decks with its stale air, and the potential stench of vomit from fellow seasick travelers. No, one must ride the swells and stay put in the fresh air and wind.

While we awaited our transport, we stayed at a local inn. By now Anne and I had gotten used to each other and worked out our roles and responsibilities; it was my great joy to spoil that girl rotten. Food, food, and more food, and I gave her a clean kirtle to wear so she could wash the one that she’d gotten at Leeds. I told her I’d hoped she’d burned the old one and she assured me she had. “My lady, the fabric is so soft! I feel like a princess!”

She’d protested when I told her we must wash and comb out her hair, and that I would be doing the scrubbing. I feared lice, and since she slept close to me, didn’t want to risk it. Thankfully her mother was vigilant about lice, she’d told me, but she certainly benefited from a dousing of my shampoo, which I’d brought in a glass bottle, courtesy of the 21st century. She smelled a whole lot better, and apart from needing a haircut, looked like a much healthier version of the girl we’d pick up a few days before.

Sitting in the inn’s dining room after me having put Anne to bed (this time) after an early supper, along with the puppy (she said just to poke her awake when I needed my ties undone), I was given a seat by the proprietor and ordered chicken, peas, and a side of bread. The chicken was grilled by the fire and was delicious, but as expected, the peas were mushy, getting stuck in my veneers. Whatever nutrients had been in there initially were long since boiled away. The bread was hard, but filling. I ate alone; I don’t know what had happened to my other travel companions, but I had a small book I’d brought with me from home, leather bound, nothing on it to indicate it was from the future, except that the language was slightly more modern. That was all the company I needed.

I read from Pride and Prejudice, “She was convinced that she could have been happy with him, when it was no longer likely they should meet.” Ah, Lizzie, if you thought falling in love
